Interrailing in Europe summer 2010 POROS part1

After sitting two hours in a bus we arrived to Corinth bus stop and saw Thanassis and his wife waiting for us! :) It had been two years since I had last seen them. They have seen me every summer of my life since I was 5 months old, so it wasn't akward to see them. The famous Corinth canal was only 500 metres away so we walked there to see it. I had been there last time when I was 14 years old. It still looked magical! After seeing and taking pictures of it we started our drive to the island of Poros!

I hadn't even realised how much the place meant to me and how much I had missed it until I saw it again. All the familiar people and all the familiar beaches, restaurants, supermarkets etc, it was almost like the place I grew up in. The ride was fierce, highspeeding on the curvy mountains without seatbelts.. Because of the new highway it took only 1,5 hours before we arrived to Galatas. We also passed the village of Trizinia were me and my family used to go almost every summer to eat at our friend's parents house. They had the most wonderful house with dogs, cats, coats, roosters, chickens etc. on their backyard. I remember once leaving from the house with my little sister and this young boy (our friend's sister's son) who was at the time maybe 9 years old (I was around 14) and he took us the to place where all the neighbourhood kids played and used to spent time. We walked to this square through these narrow allies (no lights anywhere and it was pitch black) and in the square all the kids came to talk with us (at least the ones who knew a bit of english). They also wanted to play with us and talked us in greek. It was a bit scary to look after my 10 year old sister and I only had little communication with the boy and no idea how to get back. But in the end it was a nice memory to remember. :) Oh, and my little sister Trina has gotten her name after that village. :)

The feeling I had when we waited on the Galatas side for the ferry to leave to cross the small canal to Poros (about 300 metres) and watched Poros and its center town! I felt like beeing at home again! I had to call my parents to tell them the feeling I had 'cause I knew they of all people would understand! Poros is a small island only a little over one hour ferry ride from the harbour of Athens, Pireus. Around 4000 people live in Poros. It's used by many boaters and greek families to have vacations on the island. There aren't too many tourists in the island and that's what makes it so perfeck place to spent vacations. There are several beaches, one gym, bars and one nightclub.

"Today Poros with its traditional local color, its picturesque, its cosmopolitan life and modern facilities is the ideal holiday resort."

Most of the people living in Poros live in Askeli, Neorio or the Poros town (the little triangle).

We stayed at the hotel were I've always stayed at: Villa Violetta in Askeli. We got the same room where me and my sister usually have always stayed at (since I was somewhere 14-15 years old we got our own room). We left for the supermarket we always go, only maybe 50 metres from our hotel and the salespersons were the same they have always been. Before arriving to Poros I was a bit afraid that the people we don't know so well might not recognise me, but I was so wrong! When we were paying in the supermarket the man asked how am I and where my parents are. :) Then we went walking around in Askeli and I could introduce my second home to Saija and the neighbourhood: beaches, restaurants, kiosks, gym etc..

Taken from Askeli Beach. The first mountain is the back of Poros town and the bigger one is Galatas side (Peleponnesos).

I had been waiting so long to see one of our closest family friend: Manos, who works in a restaurant in town. (Our hotel is located near the beaches (less than 100m) and maybe 2km from the Poros town. Manos had been working in the same restaurant maybe for 5-8 years. And when we went to look for him from his usual restaurant the other familiar men working there, told me that he is not working there anymore. They told me were he worked nowadays and we went there. He recognised me from far away and he was totally in shock and almost started to cry! I almost started to cry, I call him my uncle and I really had missed him! He sat on our table for a long time and we talked about how's everything going and he couldn't believe I was travelling the world alone without my parents and that I've grown so much and become so big (read old). He has also seen me every summer since a was a baby.. He was so happy that he wanted to call my mom also. And he almost didn't bring us white wine we ordered 'cause he still taught I was too young. :P

After eating at Manos place we walked passed couple of restaurants and other friend of our family recognised me too and came to talk with us. :) He was also surprised seeing me alone without my parents and he wondered how the time flies past. :) We headed to the bars of Malibu (grreat drinks!), Joy and Orion where we met these two local boys: Kiriakos and Soto who offered us to show the island and the famous Russian Bay in Neorio with their scooters. It was a great evening with the boys, I had seen the russian bay many times before. I just loved to lie on the sand in the middle of the night and stare the starry sky! The boys gave us a ride to our hotel at 3.30 am! :)

Interrailing in Europe summer 2010 PATRAS

Silent city at 5 am
After sleeping a couple of hours we had to leave from the boat at 5 am.. We had already sent a text message to Mariada that we arrive at 7 am so she wouldn't have to wake up so early to pick us up from the harbour.. So we had to spent to our on a harbour when everything was closed. Before the trip started we had contacted Mariada through Couch Surfing page and asked her if she could give us a place to stay for one night. She lived in a very nice apartment near the harbour! She was funny, our age and outgoing person! It was fun to hang with her! Before she came to pick us up we sat alone at the harbour watching the sun come up and the city the wake up. She showed us to her apartment and to the nearest supermarket so we could buy some breakfast. She also gave us a key to her apartment so we could go when we wanted because she as at school during the day.

After eating breakfast we went out the explore the city and to shop. All the shoe shops made us go crazy! :D But we ended up buying nothing. We found an info and we were told that we could get bicycles for free to go around. We tried to find this one castle or something and were cycling uphill on +32 degrees among the insane traffic.. Soon we decided to give up and return the bikes. At the train station we were trying to figure out next day's train schedules without getting an answer. They didn't know anything, not even if the train was gonna come the next day or not. At the train station we collided to three girls from Finland who were also interrailing. :)

We went to this outdoors restaurant to eat and after paying we were still standing in the restaurant when Saija says: "Hey,hey, hey, now we need some kind of plan. First we're gonna find the shopping street and then some restaurant where to eat.." Girls need to eat, right? :P

The day went by shopping and hanging in Mariada's apartment and also sleeping. In the evening Mariada told us this good restaurant where we went out to eat while she was finnishing some school work. We hang at her place after eating and listening to finish musician Anssi Kela! :D

Mariada's friend, Mariada and me going out.
Greek lifestyle and the eating hours came familiar again when we left out with Mariada and her friends at 11pm for drinks. That's what they usually do even tough they have to wake up early the next morning.. The night was a great experience of greek lifestyle! We went out to this local people hang around place near this castle we had earlier tried to look for. We ended up being a group of 12 people and I spent to night talking with Mariada's friend and her boyfriend about the education systems, work hours and salaries. It lightened up to me why the tips in the restaurants are so important. It's because it creates a big part of their salary. For example it's common that they get paid maybe 25€ for 8 hours of working + the tips..

The next morning we hopped on a bus going to Corinth. Yesterday I had called to my family friend who has a hotel in the island of Poros and he wanted to come pick us up from Corinth with his wife by their car. :) It would have been really difficult to go to Poros without their help!

On a bus going to Corinth. Almost in every city we were it was raining at some point. We brought the rain with us no matter where we went..

Interrailing in Europe summer 2010 ADRIATIC SEA

On a boat we were guided to the back of the boat. There were seats maybe in six lines. We sat there satisfied until this huge group of people came in and started putting up a camp! They had everything you could even imagine you'd need! Inflatable mattresses, electric kettle, pillows, plankets etc.. Couple of the men looked at us feeling sorry 'cause we were freezing and it wasn't even night yet.. We had nothing like that with us! That's when we realized that we were actually supposed to sleep there! Then it got even better. We happened to bump into these two girls one of whom was from Canada and the other one was from New Zealand. They showed us the deck out side which was full of people who had already chosen the "best" places near the walls and next to the doors going inside. That's when we all realised that our tickets said "place on the deck" we were supposed to sleep outside, on the deck of the boat!! When to boat took off from Venice harbour we went to the reseption to ask for a cabin and the prices. Me and Saija got our own cabin for 4-people paying 62€ each. :) Expensive, but it was totally worth it and it was for two nights.

Overdressed much?
We had been planning the boat trip about 6 months before hand and it was supposed to be Saija's high light of the trip to be on the boat and party (like the way we do it in Finland when we take a cruise to Stockholm).. Just like in Finland we went to the ship's tax free shop to buy some alcohol to get the party started.. Well, there was this one tiny little tax free shop with candy and some ouzo bottles only. We bought some Rosso Martini which was so so terrible Saija couldn't drink it at all and I drank it a little bit. We had a glamourous dinner at our cabin with the two of us eating chips, chocolate and drinking that martini. In the evening we were planning to hit the disco!! ;)

So that never happened. We put our make up on maybe for the first time in days and put something nice on and went to the bar to start the night. We were a bit overdressed at the bar! There were only old people watching football.. We started talking to this greek/german girl Ana and her cousin. Then also to other interrailers, three boys from the States: Tony, Mike and Alex. They had been in all the same cities we had!!! Almost on the exact dates. We talked with them maybe couple of hours about everything including travelling ant other stuff too. Together we laughed that we really were to only young people on board. Saija and I went to check out the disco which was empty! We ended our, yet again, wild night by eating chocolate and chips for evening snack and getting to bed before 11.30pm..

The next morning (20th of June) we woke up early to get to breakfast. Of course we had forgetten that we must change the time to greek time.. So we barely made it to breakfast before it closed up. We spent our day by watching to coast lines of Albania and trying to spot dolphins, sun bathing on the deck, playing cards, taking a nap, playing word riddles, playing hangman and different other games. Saija showed me some macig tricks.. :DD Then we spent time on the deck with Ana, Tony and Mike. We were absolutely starving and were the first ones at the dinner line 7 pm waiting to get spagetti bolognaise and greek salad with the real feta cheese!

Me, Ana, Tony and Mike and the coast line of Albania behind us
After eating Ana and her cousin got off at Igoumenitsa and we said goodbye to them. We thought that hey let's just sit around for a while and then go to bed because the ship was supposed to arrive to Patras at 5am.. We again bumbed into the other traveller girls and they told us to join them and one german guy Aaron and Mary and Leo from Edinburg. We sat on the deck of the boat drinking whine and enjoying each others company and the warm weather on Adriatic sea and ofcourse the starry sky. :) Our night was amazing! Leo was this crazy 27-years old guy (I would have said he's somewhere near maybe 21..) He told us about his insane adventures in India and how he had tried to smuggle hash in his stomach and how he had been so nervous walking past the customs.. His girlfriend had never heard the stories even tough they had been together already couple of years.. Her face expressions were fun to watch. :D Aaron on the other hand was from this free love community and he had 15 siblings. He told us about his life there and his childhood and it was straight from some Dr. Phil show or some document on tv! They had had no tv, no internet. The schools were run by the older people living in the village. We asked him what did the children do there and how did they spent their time and he answered by playing football, fishing or having sex. The children could be pregnant at the age of 14 or even younger. At the age of 16 Aaron had started feeling different from his siblings and felt like he didn't belong there. He had had a girlfriend (in the community people didn't have girl or boyfriends) and they had decided to leave from the community. At the age of 20 Aaron had left from there and is still missing his siblings but not so much his parents. All the kids are usually raised by all the adults. Aaron's girlfriend and their child had died in Spain in some car explosion. It was so terrible to hear him telling this and showing us their picture! :/ You might wonder if this is even true but it really was! :( He was so open about it and asnwered all of our questions we had. Aaron had lived on the help of the church so he had gotten used to paying bills etc.. Now he just wants to see the world, he had learnt english by reading it from the books. He basically had only his clothes and passport with him. He didn't have any plans were to go or who to meet. He went when he felt like it, where we wanted to go. :) Leo and Mary got off at Corfu and it was so fun to follow them starting to plan where to go next because it was the middle of the night. The rest of us continued our night and headed to disco were we five were the only ones there. We had heard to urban ship rumour that we don't have to leave from the boat until 7 am so we could stay up a little later. :P

Interrailing in Europe summer 2010 VENICE

On the morning of 18th of June we checked out from our nun monastery and went to look for a place to eat breakfast. After enjoying a nice italian breakfast outdoors we waited an internet cafe to open before leaving for Venice. We had to search a hostel or a place to stay in Venice. Our regional train left for Venice 1.18pm so we had lots of time before leaving, most of which be spent in front of the train station enjoying the sun and the first really warm weather! :)

The train ride went really fast and we got off at Venizia Mestro or something like that. Like every other city we looked for an info and asked a map of Venice and the answer was: "First you need to take a 10 minute train ride to Venice..." Oooops. So after we really were in Venice we tried again. We had heard that Venice is really expensive and that's why we had decided to stay there only for one night. When we asked about the map, they told us that we need to buy it..! Also in the info they told us that the hostel we had searched online earlier the same morning was located in that Mestro something place 10 minutes train ride away.. We were really pissed of and resolved it to first go to the harbour where the Minoan Lines company was and buy the ship tickets for the next day. It took us an hour to get there. We bought tickets to this tram or whatever it was, walked there like a lot with the heavy backpacks and sun shining. We were almost there when this man working in the harbour came to us and told us that the office is closed.. At this point we were starving, heavy bags on your backs getting heavier my the minute, we were in the middle of nowhere and no place to go. We were pretty desperate. We walked another almost hour back and to the info (different one this time..) they were about to close also so we got this notebook full of hotels, hostel and other places to sleep. By this point we were sitting on the floor of some parking garage. We had the map, notebook and phone. We knew which areas of Venice were the most expensive so we didn't choose them. We chose an area that was rather close to us where we were at the time. Then I just started to call to different bed and breakfast or other places. The prices were ridiculous! From 85-130€/ night!! The fifth call was only 55€/night and that divided by two! It was this old sounding woman on the phone and we told her that okey, we are coming! :D

The way to Casa Chiumento

We walked through these narrow streets of Venice and over these small bridges and admired the atmosphere of Venice before we found our place to stay. It was located near this one square and it took us a while and little help needed from a local man before we got there. It was called Casa Chiumento and the woman was old and lived upstairs. The room was tiny, only two small beds and small night stand between, we loved it! :)

We went out to eat to this near by restaurant and after that we started to look for the famous Rialto bridge which was the oldest bridge across tha canal. Near the bridge there were plenty of glamourous shops and also near the bridge we asked about to gondola ride but the prices were insane! It was 80-100€ for a short period of time! I would have wanted to see the Bridge of Signs but we decided that the gondola was way too expensive for our budget. Then we headed to Piazza San Marco by waterbus and the one way ticket was 7,5€! :D

All in all the city was amazing! It was hard to try to understand how everything is almost like floating. How have they built the city? It's like from some fairytale story (again.. :D ). Two steps from the place we stayed in was this small canal and if you wanted to leave the other way you needed a boat.

The next morning we woke up at 7 o'clock and left early without our bags to walk to the Minoan Lines office to buy the tickets for 7pm leaving boat to Greece. It took us 35minutus to walk there and we got the tickets easily. It only cost us 17€ each because we had our interrailing cards and it could be used on that company too. After that we walked back to our place and went out to eat breakfast and hang around at this cosy cafe. We weren't that eager to walk around with our backpacks.. :D It was a good weather so we decided to walk to the harbour where we spent time by playing cards before getting into the ship around 2pm. :)

Interrailing in Europe summer 2010 VERONA

Most of the train trip I slept because I was feeling so terrible.. On the train we also wrote down what we've learnt so far in Italy.
  • Ciao, kratsie and tutta la vita which we didn't understand what it meant. It was the boys joke and by using translator it means something like the old life.. but we don't know the meaning of it or what the boys meant.
  • In Italy they kiss three times on the cheeks. Sometimes only two times but the third time brings you good luck.
  • Italians drive like maniacs! They can stop in the middle of road to shout for directions from the nearest car..
  • Italian food and the order to eat it. Never mix pasta and meat/chicken together. Italian pizza!
From the train we admired the beautiful scenery; mountains and lakes. :) From the train station we first searched the info point and they gave us a nice map and good info about the address we wanted to go (hostel). We found the right bus immediately, knew were to get off from the bus and I told Saija that this can't be this easy.. We found the hostel but we couldn't get in so we called to this number on the door and the lady answered and told us that they were full. We just laughed, we knew that something would happen, it couldn't go that smoothly. We had absolutely no idea where to go. We had searched only one hostel and we had no clue where would an interner cafe be. So I happened to look at the map we got and it said there: girls hostel. So with the map we started to navigate to the hostel. On the way I got to witness Saija's love for machines!! She just lost it with this ATM machine which didn't give her any money..! :D Saija HATES all electronics, all: phones, computers, ATMs etc. even door locks and how to open doors for example in hotels.. Well, after we had gotten money we finally found the hostel after walking around like crazy. Before finding it we took our bags off and just took a pause sitting on the pavement and wondered out loud where this hostel could be. Then this girl from the balcony pointed right in front of us to this big old looking door.. It was in front of us, only two meters away and we couldn't find it.. Excellent navigating skills?

Right away on the inner court of the hostel (the courtyard was surrounded by walls) we got this feeling of being in the history like in 1500-century or middle ages or something like that (I really don't know anything about history..). The hostel was only for girls, we had strict times to be back at the hostel by 10pm, nun pictures on the walls, early wake up and check out time. Our room had this mmmm.. balcony which had been built later on to the room. We of course wanted to sleep on the balcony which had 6 beds and beneath us on the lower level was maybe 6 beds also. On the lower level there was two other girls. The room reminded us also from some early century with really simple looking beds and the curtains on the windows..

My bed

The city of Verona is famous for the Romeo and Juliet story which took place in there. We of course went to see the places were the characters had lived. We some famous places like: Piazza Bra, Piazza Erbe (our hostel was near it). Piazza Erbe, was the centre of city life during Roman times and it still has the same role: meeting place, restaurants, home of the market place. It was still full of people selling all kinds of Verona or Romeo and Juliat stuff. We didn't want (or had time to) go around and see the most famous churches or anything. We just walked around, had a peacefull evening and went to the hostel before our curfew.. We got asked out by these construction workers who worked on the amphitheatre Arena but we had to say no because on a holiday we had a curfew. :D

When we got back to our room we had this huge window open and we could hear this some kind of concert or musical event from the nearest church Santa Maria Matricolare also know as the Duomo of Verona. Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and some church music (nice combination) etc. before we went to sleep.

Interrailing in Europe summer 2010 MILAN

On 15th of June we woke up in Torino and made our way to train station Porta Susa (by tram number 10..!) ;). It turned out that we could hop on to any train to Milan. Unfortunately the train station was under renovations so we couldn't leave our backpacks there. On our interrailing trip we had some information about every city we were going but this city we really didn't know anything about. We took some random bus and got off when we felt like it and by accident we ended up to this famous plaza: Piazza Castanello. We found some great shops and did some shopping and went to grab something to eat also. It was exhausting to walk around with heavy backpacks and we got some funny faces staring at us when we shopped with them.

We took a 3 pm train to Milan and arrived there at 4.45pm. :) We looked for info point from the train station almost 15minutes and it was right in front of us the whole time! :D It was the first time that we got excellent service and great maps and good info! Right next to the train station was an internet cafe and we found a super cheap hostel/hotel called Zara near this one metro station and decided to go there. It took us quite a while before we made our way there and then the language barrier started.. Chinese-Italian woman didn't speak a word in english. We tried to explain to her, draw to her, and to show her what we wanted (we didn't want to have our own more expensive room, we wanted to stay at this room with four beds). I lost my nerves pretty quickly! Saija was the best! She told me to take it easy and take my backpack of and just breath. The woman tried to call her friend who spoke english but she didn't answer.. We ended up having a room with only one big bed, she lowered the price for us so we only paid 20€ each. What a show it was!

We left out with Stefano (the boy we met in London hostel). We went out with Stefano's car and the driving in Milan was interesting. Mostly one way streets so if you missed one crossroad it took a while to get where you wanted to go.. He took us out to this bar where we bought drinks with only alcohol in it! They were pretty strong drinks which our driver also drank.. The bar was called LoolaPaloosa. :) We got back to our chinese woman's place safely at some point of the night. :)

We woke up at 10am and we had no idea what time we were supposed to sign out from the hostel/hotel because she didn't understand when we asked her. We didn't have anything to eat (the whole trip we carried this bag with us that we called our food bag and there was always something to eat, apples or something.) or to drink! Right after we had woken up Saija went to ask that woman again what time we were supposed to be out of there and she had angrily showed her watch and it turned out we were already 10 minutes late.. So she practically threw us out! :D Starving we started looking for a supermarket but on our way I bought these high heel shoes (haven't worn them once..). From the supermarket we bought: ice tea, little tomatoes, yogurt, a breezer, apples and strawberries. We ate a brunch on this bench located in some park.

Duomo
After eating and putting on some make up we head to see Milan. Again with our backpacks on. We went to this Plaza Duomo and its cathedral. :) The cathedral looked magical and had guards on the main entrance to check your bags before going in. They didn't allow us to go in with our huge bags. :D Then we wanted to see this other sightseeing castle called Castanello Sforzesco. It had this big inner court outdoors where we ended up putting up a picnic.. Just when we had our apples and strawberries and stuff out it started raining and we didn't want to move. All the other people there run inside but not us. Then it became cold and we started our way back to the plaza duomo where we were supposed to meet Stefano. Well he was late, a lot! We sat in front of these expensive jewellery shops looking like we didn't have a place to go.

Video (hopefully it works..) :

Stefano had told us that we could spend a night at his place, or well he still lived with his parents but he had the whole downstairs for him. He finally picked us up with his car and we drove to his place. We saw this big tent in his living room... Pretty quickly it lightened up to us that we were going to sleep in the tent on a stone floor. His mom made us traditional italian food which was really good. First we ate pasta and after that the meat. They don't mix them up. Then we tasted some italian cheeses. We had rose wine with the food! :)

At the Latin bar with the boys
Then we head out to this hang around bar with Stefano's friends and had a good time there talking to people we didn't know. Also Lucas from London hostel came out with us. :) Then we went to this really really tiny bar, it was so tiny people hang outside of this bar. That was someones birthday party where we were offered shots and beer. Then the boys asked us whether we wanted to go to this "normal" bar or this latin bar with latin music and dance. Luca tried to teach us how to dance, tried.. :D All the other girls there were wearing these tiny clothes and high heels. I had nike's shoes on.. We drank a lot of beer, a lot! Back at Stefano's my night was terrible. The stone floor, it was cold and I didn't find anything without the light from my phone which wasn't in the tent with me! The next morning Stefano took us to the train station and I was feeling absolutely terrible....! I couldn't move and barely could carry my backpack.. Saija had fun laughing at me.. We were on the train heading towards Verona!

First night in Milan, finally we got a room

Interrailing in Europe summer 2010 TORINO

Breakfast looking to Lyon
On the next morning (Monday 14th) I woke up at 8am and noticed that my morning person friend Saija was already awake.. She had woken up way before me. She had already taken a shower, eaten and packed.. So I tried to be fast so we could walk to the train station and catch a train to our next city. On our way to the train station there was this big market along the river and I almost lost my nerves with Saija 'cause it took around two hours before we got passed it... I bought a watch and Saija bought some pieces of jewellery. :) We didn't get train tickets until 14.40 to Bourg St Maurice and we were told to get of at Chambery to change a train to Torino. We had spare time before our train was supposed to leave so we started looking for a internet cafe to find a hostel from Torino. We ended up choosing this one hostel but it said that its doors would close at 10pm and our train arrives at the Torino train station at 9pm.. And we have do no idea where the hostel and the train station are located.

Our stop at Chambery took around two hours. Chambery is located in southeastern France. The view from the train window was really mountainy and beautiful. From the window we could see small houses and villages aloung the mountains. :) We didn't get that much to see at Chambery we only saw were it was situated. We went there to eat something and it ended up being quite difficult since the waitress didn't speak a word in english and the menu was in french.. Back on the train to Torino Saija tried to contact our new friends (Stefano and Lucas) from Milano which we met at the hostel in London.

So our train was on time when we arrived to Torino. It took as a while before we even got out from the underground tunnels. We had exactly an hour to find our way to Hostel TO which reseption closes at 10pm. We were supposed to find a bus number 10 which would go directly to our hostel. Well we never found it. No one (surprise surprise) spoke english and we asked from several people to help us. And the people who spoke english they didn't know. Time was going past fast. Finally we found a tram number 10 but it would have came too late. So I figured: Let's grab a taxi! At first we didn't find a taxi stand and when we did there were no taxis, not one! We had 20 minutes left. By this point we were sure that we would be spending the night on some bench or at some Mc'Donalds.. :D A taxi came, the driver didn't speak english.. We were supposed to go to Via Modane 17 he took us to Via Modane 70! We had less than 10 minutes left. We made it and even got beds, even got our own room with 4 beds. :D

The view from our little balcony in Hostel TO..

The next morning we were planning to have a quick look at the city and then in the afternoon head to Milan! :)
